Roopkund: The skeleton lake

Summary

Roopkund Lake in the Indian Himalayas contains the remains of 600 to 800 people who died during multiple events spanning nearly a thousand years. Recent DNA studies have added to the site's mystery by identifying individuals of Mediterranean ancestry among the skeletons. To prevent further damage from trekkers, the government has banned camping in the area to prioritize scientific preservation.
